The Day I Gave Up Sugar
Jeremiah 6:20 Why do you bring me incense from the country of Sheba? Why do you bring me sweet-smelling cane from a faraway country?
A few years ago, I was carrying an extra twenty-five kilograms or fifty-five pounds in body weight around with me. Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever picked up a twenty-five kilogram suitcase, but it’s incredibly heavy. And that’s what I was carrying around on my body, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. […]
My father had died at age 74 from diabetes and I knew that if I didn’t do something about it, I was headed down the same path. I was in my early fifties when I decided that I had to do something. But I’d lost weight many times before, only to stack it right back on again. What I needed was a permanent solution. Now.
So, I started reading and investigating.
It turned out that one of the truly big culprits was all the sugar and refined carbohydrates in our diets (not the fat). Think about it, back in the early 1900’s people ate bacon and animal fat like there was no tomorrow. And yet, heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and obesity were rare. Besides, I’d tried the low-fat thing for years, and it hadn’t worked.
What convinced me was the statistical correlation between the increased consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates, and the rapid rise in cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Did you know that sugar isn’t mentioned once in the Bible? Why? Because it simply didn’t exist. Sugar cane is mentioned only twice, but as an exotic rarity:
Why do you bring me incense from the country of Sheba? Why do you bring me sweet-smelling cane from a faraway country? (Jeremiah 6:20)
Back in the late 1800’s the average Brit was eating around seven kilograms or fifteen pounds of sugar a year. Today that’s up around seventy kilograms or one hundred and fifty pounds – because it’s in absolutely everything. Did you know that BBQ sauce is 42% sugar? Really? And the crazy thing is, that we think this is normal.
So, I took the plunge and took the sugar and refined carbs out of my diet. I threw out all the food in our pantry that contained sugar and white flour. Do you know what was left? Almost nothing.
But the result was, that I lost twenty-five kilograms or fifty-five pounds without even trying. Maybe it sounds crazy. Thing is, it worked.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
